London's Festivals Are For Everyone!

London is known as an international city, and with its diverse International population, it's only real rival is New York City. This makes it one of the best places in the world to hold festivals. Yet, how does one choose which of London's festivals to attend? With so many festivals and fairs on offer, how does one separate the wheat from the chaff?

The London festivals covered in this article represent a selection of London's most popular and diverse festivals. There is surely a festival to suit even the most discerning Londoner's taste.

The year starts off with one of the most familiar and much loved festivals around London: the New Year's Day Parade, which (obviously) is held on the 1st of January annually.

Let's begin with the London film festival, the largest public film screening in Britain. Hosted by the British Film Institute, it screens over 300 films from around 60 countries. Starting in 1956, it has a rich history, and will undoubtedly remain on the social calendar for years to come.

Hyde Park provides the perfect backdrop for one of London's premier music festivals, Wireless scheduled for the 4th and 5th of July. Ever popular, this year it will feature Basement Jaxx and Kanye West. London hosts a number of music festivals during the year, catering to many tastes and genres.

The London Design Festival is a great choice for the artistically inclined. The event showcases the UK's creative talent with many of the top names in business and creative thought. According to the website, the Festival "is both a cultural and a commercial event...[ranging] from major international exhibitions to trade events to local showcases, installations to talks and seminars, product launches to receptions, private views and parties."

Another popular festival for the creative-minded is the City of London Festival. Founded in 1962, it is supported by the business community and offers three weeks of uninterrupted artistic and cultural displays. Some of the activities on offer include walks and talks, films, music and visual arts. It also administers a year long art programme for schools and youngsters in and around London.

Food lovers can look forward to the Taste of London Festival. For three days, many of London's top chefs come out and show their stuff. With the popularity of fine food and celebrity chefs in recent years, the event has attracted more and more visitors. This year promises to be even bigger and better than the last, as 150 of the top food producers in the UK will hand out samples to the public.

The official currency used by the event will be "the crown", which will be worth 50p. The coins can be obtained before or during the festival.

For those with a green heart, there is of course the Love London Green Festival, believed to be the largest annual green festival in the world. There are over one hundred green events on offer, the majority of which are free. Events range from great eco-thrift idea (affordable and environmentally friendly idea) workshops to activities that help the city become even greener than it is currently.

The year comes to a close with the Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree Lighting, before starting again with the New Year's Day Parade. When trying to decide which festivals to attend, it makes sense to see where your interest lies, and then to find out when and where you can catch your events of choice. With so many free events all over the city, there is no excuse not to be at one of the many London festivals.
